deviation in storage?

hello guys, i haven´t written any journals since quite a long time ^^,
well, what i´d like to ask: i sometimes see grey thumbnails from pictures and if you click them, they are said to be "deviations in storage"
please, can you explain me, what that is? i´ve tried to look it up in the FAQ but couldn´t find it...
